Maitree was envisaged as a project to provide dual benefits of environment sustainability and providing livelihood to poor farmers in the project areas. In four years since the first set of trees were planted; farmers have been able to reap benefits by selling the produce in the local markets. The plantation belt is lush green with trees stretching as far as one can see.
Studies estimate that, a large tree absorbs 20.3 kgs of carbon dioxide in a year and generates enough oxygen for a family of four.
